Up to 27 school leavers competing for each apprenticeship

Up to 27 school leavers are competing for every apprenticeship place as rising numbers of teenagers shun university in favour of the workplace. New figures show that on-the-job training schemes have been swamped with record numbers of applications over the last 12 months. The National Apprenticeship Service said that demand was being driven by rising interest among women, with young women now making up almost half of all applicants for the first time.
